Since January 1, 2024, vast quantities of chlorine have been continuously injected into public drinking water systems across Europe—without the public's active consent. Although originally introduced to combat waterborne pathogens, the long-term health consequences of chronic chlorine exposure are rarely discussed.
Chlorine itself is a toxic, corrosive gas, and when added to water it doesn't simply disappear—it reacts with organic matter to form disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), many of which are classified as possible or probable human carcinogens.
Research has linked long-term ingestion of chlorinated water to increased risks of bladder cancer, reproductive issues, and disruption of gut microbiota. Still, chlorine remains widely used in water systems due to its low cost and infrastructure simplicity, despite safer alternatives like ozone or UV disinfection being available.
